Superfood: Green tea

So, technically green tea isn’t a food, but it is loaded with incredible health benefits so it fits well into the superfood category (other than being a liquid).

Here are just a few of the benefits of green tea:

  • Increases metabolism and can help with weight loss
  • No calories
  • Regulates glucose levels, preventing insulin spikes and fat storage
  • Helps reduce bad cholesterol in the blood
  • Has been shown to reduce the risk of high blood pressure
  • Has a relaxing and tranquilizing effect
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help with wrinkles and signs of aging
  • Contains strong antibacterial and antiviral agents
  • Has been linked to reduced risk for several cancers

With all the benefits to heart, mood, mind, blood and body, why would you drink anything else?  The best way to get the biggest antioxidant punch is to drink traditional hot tea.  Although there seems to be some disagreement about the ideal amount of tea to drink, 2-3 cups a day seems to be the suggestion.  But note that green tea does contain caffeine (though not as much as coffee) so if you are sensitive to caffeine, be cautious.

  1. Great post. I have also gotten in the habit of drinking it without any (even natural) sweetener. It’s a lot easier to drink it in the winter when I’m freezing all day.
